A Nation of Helmsley's

Copied from Wikipedia:
“I said : "You must pay a lot of taxes". She said : "We don't pay taxes. Only the little people pay taxes."[2]
—Elizabeth Baum, former housekeeper to Helmsley (October 1983)

Is this what we've become? Probably not. But to be sure our leaders in Washington are apparently taking the Helmsley approach. I just can't help but feel that the current Treasury Secretary and the future Health and Human Services Secretary are the tip of the iceberg.

What is truly galling is that had Geithner and Daschle not been nominated, there is good evidence that they would still not be paying their fair taxation. How many other big shots in DC are not paying their taxes?

Beyond that, there is this: If the taxes weren't so blasted high in this country, and especially here in Wisconsin, then perhaps folks would pay them. Not even the IRS can claim to fully understand the IRS' own code. It is so complicated that the IRS' own service agents are immune from making false claims about what is taxable and what isn't. Perhaps with a bunch of lefties being caught up in tax troubles this is a good time for someone to suggest a massive simplification of the tax code. Flat tax? Sales tax? Who cares?

Just fix the blasted thing so that the "big people" pay their taxes, too.
